Situation report - By Kevin McElvaney

January 7, 2018: I know the infamous Camp Moria on the Greek Island of Lesvos for more than two years now. Back in 2015, asylum-seekers were able to move to the mainland, after they were successfully registered. Now the asylum decision is made on the islands and as a result most refugees are stuck. Procedures take up to 12 months. In January 2018 about 6000 refugees are hosted in and around Camp Moria, which is designed to host 2000. Those people have no regular access to water, electricity and sanitary facilities, while applying for asylum on European ground. These images were taken on a single ‘walk’ through this Camp Moria, a former military base.
Article 1 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights: Human dignity is inviolable. It must be respected and protected.
